SE Mn Youth Basketball League Cancelled for 2020-2021

October, 4, 2020

It is with regret that I announce that the SE Minnesota Youth Basketball League will not operate during the 2020-2021 school year.

After reviewing the latest announcements for winter sports by MSHSL, their restrictions for audience attendance, and discussions with the PEM school district and representatives from other schools in our region, I have determined there is no realistic method of formulating a schedule and allowing participation of our youth across school districts. PEM has decided to create an internal youth basketball program for grades 4-6 this season that will consist of practice and play within our school only, and will not allow games between our school and others in their facilities. I am guessing other school districts will be following a similar format.

With the cancellation of the 2020-21 season, I am also making an additional announcement. After 25 years of organizing and running the SE Mn Youth Basketball League, I have decided to retire from these duties. This announcement essentially means the disbandment of the SE Mn Youth Basketball League effective today.

I encourage participating schools in our league to begin investigating opportunities for providing youth basketball play amongst area schools for the 2021-2022 season and beyond. I am hopeful that school advisors will come together and create subsets of the league to allow maximum participation, which has been the foundation for this league all these years. My goal has always been to provide opportunities for all students interested in playing basketball, not just traveling teams for selected youth. I am hopeful the ‘community education’ spirit of the SE Mn Youth Basketball League will continue for years to come.

Good luck to all as you determine the best ways to provide our students with basketball opportunities during this season. Stay safe and healthy!
